I've been keeping my little sketchbook in my GTA bag for months now, hoping it'll get me to sketch more.
Mostly I just forget that it's there. Or I put it off because I don't have a reference to draw from (which is kind of a bullshit excuse, I know.)
But last week I took a class on making money from licensing your art. And one of the teachers got started by just putting simple icons on Shutterstock. In fact, the majority of her income comes from simple drawings of food. So art doesn't have to be a masterpiece to make money. It can be simple.
I still don't fully believe that. But there's plenty of real world proof so I'll catch up eventually.
I decided I'd just draw some simple things along a theme. Worst case scenario, they're crappy doodles that I never show anyone. Best case scenario, I have the beginnings of a pattern or icons. No matter what, drawing is better than scrolling through social media.
I chose Alice In Wonderland because I just saw an AMAZING dance show based on it (Queen of Hearts by Company XIV)
It's got a lot of related iconography from really simple (card suits) to elaborate (mad hatter.) I didn't get *too* elaborate because I was just doing it during stolen moments between sessions. But I like a lot of what I did and I'm genuinely shocked by how well I drew those tea pots.
