I posted the original version of this essay on here a couple months ago. It's changed a lot since then and I'm not totally convinced it's for the better. The original version was a bit more tightly focused so I feel like it was better at weaving threads throughout the piece. But this version also tells more of the story of my relationship with my father, which is probably more of what people are interested in.
I'm glad the piece is out there. It's really resonating with people. And working with an editor made it clear to me that this story really needs to be a book. It's just still such a big, unwieldy story, that I don't know how best to push it into book shape.
