2003: The Year of the Matrix. As part of a hype cycle mean to promote the two sequels to the 1999 blockbuster that year, the Wachowski Sisters released an anime anthology film that they themselves spearheaded to give back to the anime creators and artists that inspired them. This is The Animatrix.
