November 19th: The Animatrix

It’s been 20 year since the Year of the Matrix. A year where Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revoloution were filmed back to back released within six months of each other. But in between all of that was the Wachowski sisters tribute to anime. Getting together some of their favorite idols of anime and anime-inspired animation, the Wachowskis spearheaded nine short films about their little blockbuster franchise that formed The Animatrix. And though time has been much kinder to The Matrix trilogy, does the same apply to this animated anthology?

November 30th: Outlanders

It’s been awhile since we ventured into an 80s “bikini girl in space” OVA and we’ve got one I’ve simmering for awhile. Outlanders is a seemingly basic entry in the subgenre that nevertheless had a surprising amount of history behind. From its role in early anime publishing to it also being a factor in why the author manga cut it short out of spite. Watch this one, ya bitch!

December 15th: Tokyo Godfathers

Yup, we got another 20th anniversary to get through before this year is out. Appropritaley, it is on THE Christmas anime movie. We get to talk about Satoshi Kon, this modern Japanese remake of an old Western about, how this movie fits the season, and its overall representation of the “outsiders” of Japanese society. Truly a more worthy holiday film from 2003 than Elf.

December 29th: Vacation

No, there’s no obscure anime called Vacation. I’m actually taking the holidays off. Because I’m gonna be working on two KYOTO VIDEOs with massive topics (on top of a third video most have been waiting for), I’m definitely gonna need the time to rest and recover my strength. So yeah, KB’s outta here until January, kids. But I’ll be sure to have plenty of big videos to tide you over until then.

January 12th: Crystal Triangle

I’ve really delved into the 80s anime scene in America and a lot of the first licensed titles were right on the money hits. Crystal Triangle is not one of those. This Raiders of the Lost Ark rip-off seemed to have gotten a lot of push among title like Project A-ko and Bubblegum Crisis, but for some reason, distributors didn’t bite. Finding that out is gonna be the real adventure when talking about this forgotten artifact.

January 30th: Otaku no Video

Fifth year of this show is done! On to the sixth year with a deep dive into Gainax’s ode to otakudom with their part-OVA part-documentary Otaku no Video. We’ll look the history of otakudom, Gainax own history with their subculture and how the perception of otaku has changed in the 30+ years when this landmark nature documentary on otaku in their natural habitat came out.
