Here's the upcoming slate of KYOTO VIDEO episodes to be airing this quarter.
Metropolis – 2/12/2021:
We look at the 2001 Metropolis, a large-scale film created in the midst of a second anime film renaissance that seemed to vanish just as soon as it premiered. We’ll dive into it’s production history, how it stacks up to the manga and 1927 film it’s adaptating and how it’s the ultimate tribute to one of anime’s greatest masters.
Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yoko – 2/26/2021:
A forgotten classic of the early OVA days, Leda: the Fantastic Adventure of Yoko is a visual treat and one of the best-looking titles of 1985. We’ll talk about that and how it became the stand-out titles for Studiom Kaname, a young upstart that burned bright but fizzled out fast.
Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo – 3/12/2021:
It’s Lupin time again! And of course, we’re talking about his first theatrical outing The Mystery of Mamo. The total opposite ofCastle of Cagliostro, we’ll see how well TMS handled bringing their star character back to his rakish roots in the feature film they ever did.
Wanna-Be’s – 3/26/2021:
Wanna-Be’s is a weird little 1986 titled that would’ve been forgotten had it not been for its plot being centered around the wild world of female wrestling and it’s status as the first screen credit given to Kenichi Sonoda. Is this anime more than a footnote in a noted character designer’s career? We’ll see!
Dangaioh – 4/16/2021:
We have been neglecting mecha anime for awhile on this show, so why don’t we get back to basics with the 80s mecha OVA Dangaioh. The anime that put Masami Obari on the map. Get ready for giant robots, psychic warriors and tan girls who can lift boulders over their heads.
Sorcerer Hunters – 4/30/2021
Slayers wasn’t the only light novel fantasy series to get an adaptation in the mid-90s. There was also Sorcerer Hunters, a much wackier and hornier take on the fantasy genre. Tune in to find out this series origins and its localization controversies as well as finding out whether or not this anime is too silly for its own good.
