Boy, some year we've been having.

But no amount of drastic status quo shake-ups or chaos reigning outside our collective doors is gonna stop KYOTO VIDEO. Especially for the amazing slate of anime we have in the next quarter.

5/15/2020 - Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro

An undisputed classic among anime fans that makes it the perfect first foray into 70s anime for this show. We'll not only exploring the history of Lupin as well as the background of Miyazaki's debut, but also exploring of the influence of this film. Not just in anime, or even in animated film, but film in general.

 5/29/2020 - Sukeban Deka

An odd little early 90s OVA title revolving around a yo-yo-wileding lady delinquent who works as a detective. This OVA might not be truly noteworthy if it wasn't for the fact that it's based on highly-influential 70s shoujo manga that grew into a succesfu franchise that's completely unknown in the West.

 6/12/2020 - Slayers TRY

That time of year again, kids! And this is the one you've all been waiting. The foray into Slayers third and most divisive season. The only season that's entirely original and not based on any of Hajime Kanzaka's novels, Slayers TRY is certainly an imaginative take on the Slayers-verse what with it's weird filler episodes, larger-than-normal cast and the infamous Filia. Is it a season best left scattered to the winds or can it hang with its two more established siblings?

6/26/2020 - Voices of a Distant Star

Makoto Shinkai has established himself as a tour de force amongst the younger generation of anime creators with titles like Children who Chase Lost Voices and Your Name. And yet hardly anyone talks about his short film Voices of a Distant Star, the film that established his trademark look and tools of the directorial trade.

7/17/2020 - Air

A tribute to Kyoto Animation and one of their first major hits as an independent studio. While Air has become somewhat of a punchline these days thanks to its very dated character designs, it always helps to go back see what helped define a famous anime studio. Plus, when you look past the designs, you can find a flawed yet emotionally resonant anime with a lot heart.

7/31/2020 - Samurai Shodown The Motion Picture

EVO 2020 might be in a state of flux at the time of this writing, but that's not gonna stop the annual tradition of analyzing fighting game anime adaptations. This year's model is the Samurai Shodown anime, an adaptation that struck while the franchise's iron was white hot. Does the anime do its source material justice? Probably not, but were gonna talk about it anyway.

Thanks for subscribing and tuning! Also, be on the lookout for Part 2 of a certain miniseries that should be coming within the next month.
