Your character release is the ship a large portion of this book will take place on. The I. V. (Imperial Vessel) Niri. My goal is to make this ship feel like a character in the story. After reading several writings from ship captains or crew members of war vessels, they all seem to talk about their ship as if it were a living breathing thing they have to deal with. I LOVE this.
Obviously this idea has been done before. Lots of authors have their ships, cars, plains, trains, etc,. have personality. I want to capture that as well and make it a real part of the atmosphere.
I wouldn't be a good author if I did not take inspiration for my ship from a real life example, right? So for that purpose, I have been looking at the HMS Warrior. The largest wooden war ship ever put to sea, and truly an iron clad beast. I will obviously take and remove from the real life example to fit the setting, but after looking at several fleets, nothing struck me quite like this behemoth of a ship.
So for additional insights into the world based on the ship:
1. Within The Empire the ships are directly named after their current Captains. Sailors believe the soul of the ship moves with the commander until they leave the sea. The physical body of the war machine does not matter. So if Niri was put in charge of a row boat, that would also now be called Niri. You can deduce a bit about the Captain from that. Mainly her name is Niri. (Boom, two for one deal here)
2. Artillery exists in this world. We have cannons, guns, and many more things that reflect our own world during the similar time period.
3. This is a story of exploration within a warship sent out into a dangerous unknown. Extrapolate as you will.
History of the ship:
She is brand spanking new, and has been put into the service of a Captain whose reputation earned her a 121 gun ship.
