Book Update - Scrapped Ideas

As many aspiring writers do, I have had many bad ideas while writing this story. Let's go into some of them now!

1. Talking monkey companion. Yeah, let's get the worst idea out of the way first. What I am writing is fairly dark in tone; darker than I think a lot of people are expecting. I wrote a lot of material around talking monkey character who had seen too much of war. It was not until I went back to reread everything I had that I realized how stupid this really was. Who the hell wants to read a fantasy book involving ocean warfare, where a talking monkey is a pivotal character? Not proud of that one.

2. Love interests. Possibly a spoiler here, but I considered having developing romance be at the forefront for a long time. A typical two people falling for each other during difficult times arch. It felt so cliché and while I know people like to see love between people who want to do the sticky dance, I will be avoiding the typical, "Oh, I love you, but we cannot cause ______!" BS for this one. I don't like it much in the books I read, so what I write will focus on the love between friends and family.

3. Hard magic system. I know this will come as a shock for people who pay attention to what I like in books, but yes, my magic system will be a bit soft. There will be rules for it, and it will not act as a plot device or loophole for the hero (I PROMISE), but this story needs a softer magic system to make sense, so it is getting one. Trying to force the gods system I am dealing with to have a hard magic system did not work, period. Seems obvious now, but yes, gods are antithetical to hard magic systems.

New character coming soon as well!
