Is Trump a fascist? Will he end democracy in the United States? Will he impose an American dictatorship? Is the whole country going to crumble apart into a new dark age? With the inauguration on January 20, these are major questions whose answers are very important to this country and the entire planet, even if you think the answers are obvious. Now, I’m going to try to be as NEUTRAL, HONEST, and FACTUAL as I can be. I’m going to shed all my personal biases and look at historical sources, which I will cite and link below. We’re going to answer a bunch of questions, but primarily we’re going to try to see whether or not we can diagnose the President of the United States with fascism.
This is What Why How, and that’s what the video’s about. If you like this sorta thing don’t forget to subscribe. Oh, also, YouTube might demonetize this video for the subject matter, so why not support me on Patreon.com so I can keep making these videos?
Ok.
What is Fascism?
The number one most stereotypical source people online turn to when defining fascism is “Ur-Fascism,” by Umberto Eco, an Italian Renaissance Man who didn’t actually live in the Renaissance but instead grew up in Mussolini’s Italy. In case you didn’t know, Mussolini ruled Italy as a dictator and the head of the Partito Nazionale Fascista. Since Mussolini was first, all other similar movements get thrown in the same bucket of “fascism.” So, we’d expect any true fascist movement to at least be vaguely similar to Mussolini’s—we’ll talk more about that later.
Anyways, why do people always turn to Umberto Eco? To be honest, I don’t really have any idea. His essay about fascism is not very good. In his defense, there are a lot of worse definitions of fascism out there. I think understanding fascism is kind of like the IQ bell-curve meme. The generic understanding of fascism is authoritarian, warmongering nationalism. That’s pretty good.
