Clara wasn't quite sure what to do, though she could feel the cloth of her diaper warming up beneath her, growing damp and heavy, as she stared into the eyes of Madelyn. She looked so beautiful and grown-up in her black dress, so different from Clara, wearing just her soggy diaper and plastic pants, hair in braids.
It was a strange feeling, seeing somebody from her previous life, there in the Nursery. Other than when she performed in the cafeteria, it was easy to convince herself all that had been a dream, a fantasy, that it couldn't possibly have been her... Except, here was evidence of it, standing there and smirking down at her, holding a bottle of milk.
She knew she ought to do something about it, that she should at least say some snide comment, to continue their catty relationship, but that seemed silly now. If there had ever been any real competition, it was obvious who had won... They weren't equals anymore, not by a long shot. Maddie had come onto the scene a little later, had been the new thing, which was how Clara had reasoned she was able to sell more albums than her, sometimes; now, however, Clara wouldn't even know where to start when it came to making new music, releasing anything else, other than her bowels. And even that, she had no control over...
In a way, it almost confirmed her previous theory, that she had never been a pop star in the first place. How could she have been, when she saw a real one here in front of her, and she could see that she was nothing more than a helpless little baby compared to her?! There was no way she could have fallen that far, right? It felt like she'd been a baby forever, sometimes, like she'd never truly grown up, outside of daydreams...
"Well?" Madelyn leaned over, Clara blushing as she felt her mouth water, seeing down the other woman's dress. There was nothing sexual about it; the only real way Clara knew how to express her sexuality now was to hump at one of her stuffed animals in her diapers. As yummy as the bottle looked, however, what she saw under the dress made her even hungrier. "What do you have to say, Clarissa?"
She plucked the pacifier out of Clara's mouth, and, immediately, Clara's thumb took its place. She was glad Maddie hadn't taken her bunny after all, so she could keep cuddling with it, while her muddled mind tried to make sense of everything that was happening. She was less happy to lose her paci, which had been a big help in keeping her from getting too freaked out by this colliding of worlds. Sucking her thumb helped, but it wasn't nearly the same.
"Don't be rude, Clara," Ms. Barlow commented from the other side of the room, reminding Clara that she was still there, still observing, that she ought to be a good girl... Not that she'd ever intentionally do anything else. "She said some very nice things about your song, didn't she? What do you say to that?"
Clara nodded, the words helping remind her of what the truth was, of who she was. "Fank yew," she mumbled around her thumb, hoping that was good enough.
"Much better, Clara," Ms. Barlow told her, Clara beaming with pride at the praise. "Now, she brought you a present, too, didn't she? What do you say to that?"
Clara squirmed, mind growing crowded again as she tried to think. It was such a hard thing to do... It was so much easier when a grown-up just told her what to do, or say. "Umm... Fank yew, pwease?"
"For what?" Maddie teased.
"Umm... Milkies?" It wasn't actually that difficult a question, though, at the same time, it was the most she'd thought for herself in what felt like months, at least.
"She is so precious!" Madelyn gushed, turning to Ms. Barlow. "I mean, I'd heard, but... It's different seeing it in person, isn't it? I can see why your prices are as high as they are."
"And worth every penny," Ms. Barlow nodded. "Now, you'd better give her what she wants, or she's going to start crying, poor thing."
