Finally, Hazel seemed to make her choice, opening her mouth with a defiant, "Oh, you must be mistaken, Prissy here is obviously barely mature enough for school, much less work!"
Janet turned, staring up at Bernice, waiting for her to defend her, to reiterate who she really was. If she kept at it, even Zella would have to admit the truth eventually... Right?
"You must be right," Bernice shrugged instead, bouncing Janet again. "Silly me... The person I'm thinking of does look a lot like her, and certainly deserved all this, but that must just be a coincidence."
"No, it isn't!" Janet shook her head. "You know it isn't, Bernice! Tell her!"
"She has been trying to get me to believe that story all weekend," Hazel said. "But we know the truth, don't we, Prissy?"
"No!" Janet whined. "I-I mean, yes, but it isn't...!"
"Come on," Hazel held out her hand. "You've taken up enough of this nice lady's time. We probably ought to be heading out anyway. Tell her thank you."
Janet looked up at Bernice, trying to use her huge eyes to will her to put her foot down, to tell them who she really was... "Well, Prissy?" Bernice asked, that name sounding so much worse, coming from someone who definitely knew better, who could have saved Janet from this humiliating fate. "You heard her."
Janet wanted to kick and scream and throw a fit, but that was only going to lead to another spanking, likely right here, in front of Bernice... If Bernice didn't do it herself. "Th-Thank you," she grumbled.
"You are so very welcome," Bernice grinned. "Believe me... It was my pleasure."
She set Janet down on the ground, on the opposite side of the chair, forcing her to crawl around to reach Hazel's hand, and be helped to her feet. Janet was relieved to be getting out of there, to be going anywhere else, where she'd, hopefully, be able to wear something else, something that covered her diaper, if such a thing existed. She didn't mind toddling back around the pool too much, knowing that was where she was headed, until she thought about the possibility of running back into those college kids.
They probably wouldn't mess with her again, after Bernice's threat... But Bernice wasn't around now, and Hazel and Kenzi were far less likely to defend her against them. Even though she had no idea what she would do if she saw them, since she didn't dare pull away from Zella's hand, and would have had to crawl if she did, her eyes darted around the crowds, searching for them, cheeks blazing as she saw how many people were staring at her, giggling...
Of course, once they got to the shower room, and she was put back on the bench to wait, she was reminded that she had nothing to change into. The other two girls took turns, rinsing and drying off, putting their regular clothes back on, but Janet got none of that. She hadn't gotten in the pool, so there was no need to hop in the shower, and her onesie had been left in the car. All she could do was fidget anxiously, positive the girls from the group of students were going to walk in at any moment.
She was feeling exhausted, from everything she'd been through, and being on edge for so long, waiting for things to get even worse, so she didn't think much of Hazel and Kenzi's playful, "See you later!" as they parted ways in the parking lot, taking it for granted, thinking that the day was almost over, that Kenzi, at least, was going back to her own place, and was going to be leaving her alone.
The car ride wasn't nearly long enough, however, and, when she looked out the window, she saw they were at not the house, but an ice cream shop, and, next to them, waving from her car, was Kenzi. While she couldn't say she wanted to be there with Kenzi, she was feeling a little hungry, and she'd more than earned a treat... However...
"C-Can I at least have my onesie?" she mumbled into her pacifier, already knowing what answer to expect.
"That's not going to fit over your diaper," Hazel told her, unbuckling her seatbelt. "You'll be fine."
That was easy for her to say... The shop was much busier than Janet would have liked, making her self-conscious as she toddled in, messy diaper still on full display, and took her place in line. "I'm so glad you said you wanted to come here after all," Hazel said to Kenzi. "It really does look yummy, doesn't it?"
It did... Every flavor sounded delicious, to the point where Janet wasn't sure how she was going to pick. She knew Zella had told her she'd only get ice cream if she behaved herself, and, in her step-daughter's mind, that hadn't happened, so she didn't want to push it, but she was gearing up to ask if she could get two scoops when they reached the front of the line, Kenzi putting in her order first.
"Umm... Ma'am?" Janet tried to think of the best way to phrase it without sounding rude. "C-Could I...?"
"I'd like two scoops of the blueberry cheesecake, in a waffle cone," Hazel told the worker, as if Janet hadn't been speaking at all.
"Of course!" the worker smiled. "And what can I get for her?"
Janet reached for her pacifier, worried Hazel's claims that she couldn't be understood with it in - despite all the evidence to the contrary - would make it more difficult for the girl to hear her, wondering if she should take the chance and get two scoops after all... And felt Zella's hand over hers, pushing it back in.
"None for her," Hazel answered for her. "She has a sensitive tummy, so she's not ready for ice cream yet."
"Poor little thing," the worker said. "Just wait until you're older, cutie! You don't know what you're missing!"
Yes, she did! And that made it all the worse... How dare Hazel bring her here, and then not let her get anything?! That was so cruel... And then, to add insult to injury, they decided the weather was nice enough to go outside to eat, rather than staying in the crowded store. Hazel handed her cone over to Kenzi for a moment, and opened up the trunk of her car, digging through the shopping bags and coming up with a pouch of baby food, handing that to Janet instead.
"There you go!" she smirked. "So you don't feel left out!"
Janet wrinkled her nose, her distaste for the incredibly unfair substitution only growing when she saw the flavor was prune, wanting nothing more than to toss it into the garbage on their way to one of the picnic tables outside the shop. That was definitely a bad idea, however, so, reluctantly, as she saw at the table, legs swinging listlessly beneath her, she sucked at the pouch, watching Hazel and Kenzi enjoying their ice cream cones.
"Don't look so sad, Prissy!" Kenzi teased, seeing her expression. "All you have to do is behave yourself for once, and maybe next time, you can have some, too!"
"Go on," Zella urged, reaching over and giving the pouch a squeeze, taking Janet by surprise, purple mush oozing out of the corners of her mouth, making her look even more like a baby. "We're not waiting all night for you to finish!"
What a sight she must be, Janet thought, trying in vain to wipe her face clean, succeeding more in smearing the baby food further across it. In a way, she was glad Bernice had seen her at the pool, rather than here, like this. Even if she had, though, would she have given Janet a second look, or simply assumed she must be a slightly tall toddler?
Hazel did clean her up with some napkins after they were done, before letting her back into the car. The mashed prunes had been more filling than she expected, and the fresh indignities had done nothing to invigorate her, so, head leaned against the car door, she dozed off on the drive back home, ready for the day to be over.
Except it wasn't... Not quite. She woke up in her crib, although at least one side was down, her tankini replaced with the Princess Sofia PJ shirt, which was hardly any better at hiding the same diaper she'd spent so much of the day in. While it was humiliating, waking up messy, it was almost worse realizing how used to it she was getting, how natural it was starting to feel.
Taped to the bars on the side that was still up was a note, instructing her to, 'Come to the living room if you want a change before bed.' She wasn't sure why Hazel couldn't have done that on her own, when she was changing her into the pajama top, and, after her nap, she wasn't particularly tired, though, from the look of the sky outside her window, she suspected it was getting close to her bedtime - according to Zella, anyway - but there was no way she was going to turn down the chance to finally get a fresh, clean diaper. It was going to feel so good!
She blushed; was she really that excited over the idea of being put into a diaper?! The answer, much to her chagrin, was yes, especially when she hadn't known if it was going to happen or not. Hazel had threatened not to change her for the rest of the day, and she'd never clarified if that meant no new diaper at bedtime or not, since that would be for the night.
She carefully clambered out of the crib, crawling down the halls, towards the living room, her pace slowing as she heard voices coming from it, far more than just Hazel and Kenzi. Was Hazel throwing a party?! Did she really want Janet to go right into the middle of it to get a diaper change?!
Janet froze, wiggling her bottom, nibbling at her pacifier. Was she going to do it? It would be simple to go back to the crib, pretend she'd slept through the night... But that would require her to go to sleep in a dirty diaper again, and probably wake up in it once more, unless Hazel took mercy on her, which felt incredibly unlikely.
She'd been so happy about getting a change, at last... Did she really have it in her to crawl all the way back to the guest room, to try to get to sleep in this loaded, stinky diaper? Maybe she was wrong... Maybe it wasn't a party at all, and it was just the TV, turned up loud... That felt very unlikely, but she had to convince herself it was a possibility, if she was going to even consider moving forward.
But was it going to work? What was Janet going to do?
Go back to the crib and wait until morning?
Go to the living room, and find Hazel, Kenzi, and the rest of their high school friends?
Go to the living room, and find Hazel, Kenzi, and the college kids from the pool?
Or go to the living room, and find Hazel, Kenzi, and an over-active sound system?
