Straight up watercolors didn't work out super well when painting crows.
But I really liked the combination of watercolor and pen on those pumpkins from a few posts ago. So I thought I'd try it for the crows.
I started with a very simple pencil drawing, pretty much just blocking out the overall shapes of each crow. Then I did a more detailed version with pen and erased the pencil lines.
This pen isn't really meant for art. It's just a slightly fancy ballpoint. That stops me from getting too precious with the lines. I can't really help but make them a bit scribbley.
Then I added watercolor. I am super psyched about how they turned out.
They still don't look black, but I think they suggest black well.
Johnny was so impressed he threatened to try to make a graphic novel with me but speculated it would probably be the project that made us kill each other.
I declined to comment. Except to say that I'm still FAR too reliant on reference photos to try anything that ambitious.
Still, I really like this method of working and am interested in seeing what else I can do with it.
