The women in this book have been relatively neglected in history books or have no names left. It is a story of a woman who missed you and kept her incision all her life because she made love once, and even had to give up her life because of her loved one.

조선 시대 여인들은 어떻게 사랑을 했고 어떻게 살았을까? 또한 그녀들의 삶에는 어떤 애환이 있었을까? 이 책은 철저한 남성 위주의 신분사회에서 가슴 절절한 사랑을 했던 조선의 여인들, 역사에 그다지 이름이 거론되지 않았던 여인들의 이야기와 기록만을 취합해 조선 시대를 애(愛)와 애(哀)의 관점에서 살피고 있다. 이 책에 등장하는 여인들은 그동안 역사서에서 상대적으로 소홀하게 다루어졌거나 이름조차 남아 있지 않은 인물들이다. 단 한 번 사랑을 나누었기 때문에 평생 동안 님을 그리워하면서 절개를 지킨 여인, 사랑하는 사람 때문에 목숨까지 버려야 했던 여인들의 이야기다.
