Stepping into a loud tavern in an otherwise sleepy city, I scouted my friend's friend out after he scouted me. The strong, fairly short man was already smiling and making his way over to give me a hug. He shouted loud enough over the cacophony of the place for me to catch that my quest target was on the back patio, then ushered me through to the back. I followed him closely through the heat and soundwave of merry people drinking to live music and singing. I breathed a deep breathe of the cooler night air as we broke through the wave of chaos into a quieter babble of more intimate chatter that was flowing behind the bar. We made our way to the edge of the stream of chatter where a portly man sat sipping a drink. The photographer I've been meaning to connect with. I sized him up quickly, would he be the one?
He respectfully offered me a chair. After small talk that lead into conversations on our art pasts, presents, and futures, autism, and our mutual appreciation of the Man Enough podcast, he broke out his phone to show me what work he's done. As I leaned in, I felt a small jolt race through me the moment my eyes hit the screen. Shibari. By this time, I knew he had done ties and expressed interest, but to see the work in front of me gave me a spark of creative passion. As we scrolled through his previous ties, that spark grew and settle into an artistic desire. We set a day to shoot.
...
This was our second shoot, where we decided to try our first ties together. It was supposed to be a short shoot to test the first iteration of the look and tie, but as the night wore on, we kept talking and shooting. Shibari is a beautiful art that requires trust and communication, and I find can be quite expressive. I hope you enjoy this trip into a witchy haze of a shoot!
