One of my heaviest masks is by Studiogum, model GMH22.. this mask is a 1mm thick heavy molded rubber mask with a glued zipper, clear lenses, and is equipped with an interior mask for minor airway redirection.
The mask has a standard 40mm threaded air inlet with two custom air exhausts on either cheek. Air flows in through the threaded inlet straight to your nose and mouth, it's then exhaled through two one way valves in the inner mask, which goes out the two cheek holes (and sometimes past the lenses).
This is incredibly comfy, has a hair guard to prevent snags, and is somewhat custom fit (neck/head) for maximum comfort, it's truly a joy to wear!
Pros
- Extremely comfortable
- Heavy rubber
- Well made
- Hair guard
Cons
- Not as "rigid" as I imagined
- Fogs easily
- Cannot be worn underwater
- Not the best for breath-play/smoke-play
If I could improve this mask in any way it would to be a LOT thicker, 3-4mm would be lovely.. also the inner air redirection would be fixed.. I prefer masks with a "defogger" configuration, or a "direct airflow" configuration (explanation below).
- "Defogger"
- Inhale
- Air passes lenses (defogging them)
- Air reaches lungs
- Exhale
- Air leaves mask
- "Direct Airflow"
- Inhale
- Air reaches lungs (immediately)
- Exhale
- Air leaves mask
- An advantage of configuration #1 is your mask never fogs up (woohoo!).. a small disadvantage is during smoke-play. If you breathe in, the smoke invades your mask and covers your eyes (not so bad), but real smoke stings your eyes! So configuration #2 is preferable for smoke-play sessions.
- Not sure how many of you are into smoke play, I used to enjoy it quite a lot, but for now I'm smoke-free. I don't know much about vaping, that might be something to try.
- Functionality is a bit limited, not recommended for breath-play, smoke-play, underwater-play, no water/straw adapter, connecting a rebreathing bag requires taping exhaust ports.
- Price isn't ridiculous, us Americans don't pay VAT, so the mask ends up being about $175 (excluding VAT, converting to USD), and the quality/comfort are unparalleled, excellent craftsmanship.
Scorecard...
- Look: 5/5
- Feel: 5/5
- Function: 2/5
- Price: 4/5
Overall: 8/10
