Dead Leaves – November 14th: Studio Trigger is certainly one of the biggest anime studios in the world right now. But without this short film helping to introduce Hiroyuki Imaishi and his madcap, crass directorial style, that studio might as well not exist. Will explore the seminal 2004 piece of insanity known as Dead Leaves and look at the mark it made on history.
Purple Eyes in the Dark – November 28th: You know how Cipher the Video was this super 80s music video/commercial for the manga rather than its own adaptation? Well it wasn’t the only one that did that. We’ll be looking 1987’s visual city pop tone poem Purple Eyes in the Dark and see if can draw the viewers in. As well as wonder why this phenomenon only happened to shoujo manga.
Those Who Hunt Elves – December 16th: Back to the 90s to look at another long-lost fantasy comedy created to capitalize on Slayers. This time it’s 1996’s Those Who Hunt Elves, an isekai anime that completely lampooned the genre before it was even properly built. But does comedy hold up, especially when the whole crux of the plot involves forcing elf girls to get naked?
Ranma ½: The Movie, Big Trouble in Nekonron, China – December 30th: Finally! I get to talk about one of the anime franchises that lured me into world of retro anime with Ranma ½. But considering the enormity and episodic nature of the source material, it’s best we look at the 1991 feature film that took the popular characters to the big screen.
Legend of Lemnear – January 16th: Once upon a time, there was an animator named Kinji Yoshimoto. He was really good at his job that AIC had no choice but to let him helm an original project that he pitched. What resulted was one of the best looking and goddamn horniest sword and sorcery anime ever spawned at the tail-end of the 80s. We look at Legend of Lemnearand see if it’s more than just a pretty pair of breasts.
Memories – January 30th: Guess what? It’s the 5th anniversary of KYOTO VIDEO. And since I started thise series off with a Katsuhiro Otomo-healmed anthology anime, I’m gonna mark this anniversary off with another Katsuhiro Otomo-healmed anthology anime. This is 1995’s Memories.
Also, to those of you inquiring about when the next MERRIE HISTORY OF LOONEY TUNES is coming out. I’m planning on having it come out this month if all thing go well. As of this moment, script and audio have been recordered and editing is still in progress. The reason why this particular episode has been taking so long is because partially it was way more difficult to find research materials since this is least documented era of the Looney Tunes and partially because I was struggling for motivation and wanted to avoid burn out. This is, after all, a side-project and KYOTO VIDEO take priority. However, the light should be at the end of the tunnel for this and since my schedule has gotten a little better, this and the final episode shouldn’t take as long. I would like to hope I end this series before February of next year.
Thank you for your patience and keep stayin’ tuned!
