Spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner. But while the grass gets greener and the days get longer, Kyoto Video is still chugging along to deliver you videos twice a month and what we have here for the next three months might be the most ambitious slate yet!

But before we get down to brass tacks, I'd like to extend some hearty gratitude and pats on the back to my esteemed Patrons! You guys really help make the job easier and hopefully we can reach that first goal which will ensure MORE CONTENT for you guys!

Now then, here's what Kyoto Video has in store for you!

Animation Runner Kuromi - 5/15/2019

It's been a hot minute since we looked at early-2000s anime and what better way to return to that time period than with a quirky insider's look at the entire industry with Daichi Akitaro's Animation Runner Kuromi. Anime about making anime was certainly never unheard of, but Kuromi has been considered by many anime fans to be the most through and focused an look at the animation industry seen through the lens of its own medium. We'll take a look at it's animation, it's humor and whether or not a statement on the artform itself can be found behind all the quirk.

Key the Metal Idol - 5/29/2019

A year before Evangelion shook up the industry with it's dark deconstructionist takes on established anime tropes, the first episode of an OVA got released that almost seemed darker by comparison. Key the Metal Idol is a dark, experimental sci-fi tale about an emotionless robot girl who is told she can become a real girl if she makes friends with 30,000 people. Throughout the story, tropes associated with sci-fi, magical girls and idol singer are taken and twisted into an unrecognizable state. Could this be an undiscovered gem? Or is there a reason why it was left in Evangelion's shadow?

Slayers NEXT - 6/14/2019

Rev up those dragon slaves! Slayers is back and better than ever! Conuting where we left off last year, we'll be taking a look at Slayers NEXT, the second season and arguably, the peak of the franchise. We'll see how the show has improved, how old characters have grown, how new characters are introduced and how the stakes can be raised even higher! Also, why Martina is one the most endearing dumbasses in a series chock full of them!

T-oy - 6/28/2019

In the never-ending search for A E S T H E T I C , people have been pondering which 80s anime looks the most "80s." And since this is my area of expertise, I feel obligated to toss my hat in the ring with my choice. 1987's T-oy is less an OVA and more of 50 minute music video. What it lacks in story, it damn well makes up for it in style and direction. It's the perfect slice 80s aesthetic that Kyoto Video was made for. But is it enough to carry an entire anime?

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumber Land - 7/15/2019

A forgotten remnant of my childhood that I didn't even know was anime until my 20s, Little Nemo was a surprisingly ambitious film that sought to push the medium of animation into new horizons. Unfortunately, it's production was troubled from the very outset and it was a miracle it even got out in the way it did. Tune as we dissect the history of the dream project that slowly morphed into a nightmare and how it affected the film overall. Just in time for its 30th anniversary, too!

Tekken: The Motion Picture - 7/29/2019

EVO will be around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with some some bad fighting game adaptations. We'll be looking at one from my favorite fighting game franchise with Tekken: The Motion Picture. At the time it came out in 1998, Tekken was a hot property in both arcades and Playstations. So naturally, Namco and Sony Music Entertainment decided to throw their weight behind something cheap to make quick buck. We'll go into why it's so bad when we get to it. Hope you like huge eyebrows and Corrosion of Conformity!

And that's all for now! Hopefully with your donations, I'll be able to work on even ambitious projects in the months to come. See you next quarter!
