For the inaugural month of the Intelexual Media Book Club, we're deciding between two nonfiction books about the black experience.

1. Assata: An Autobiography (Assata Shakur)

Originally published in 1982, this compelling autobiography will blow you away. Assata is a black revolutionary currently a fugitive of the FBI living in Cuba, and this book outlines why.

Read Length: 274 Pages

2. Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" (Zora Neale Hurston)

The manuscript for this book went unpublished for 87 years. When finally printed earlier this year, it quickly became a bestseller. The story is told from the point of view of Cudjo Lewis, the last slave brought from Africa to the US. It is also told in his vernacular.

Read Length: 137 Pages
