It is the month of September, but actually it is the eighth month on the Chinese Calender/Lunar Calender. Just so happens it is also the month where Mid Autumn Festival lands on. So for this month muscle update, I ate a traditional pastry called mooncake.
There are different types of mooncakes and different type of fillings. It usually depends where they come from and what flavours do they actually like.
The one I ate in this video is called "piggy style mooncake". This particular mooncake is part of the Guangdong/Cantonese style mooncake. It is shaped like a pig most of the time, though other animals can also be shaped too. It doesn't have fillings and it is put in a woven basket sometimes, thus it can also be called "pig basket mooncake" as well.
It was said that it used to be given to kids as in the olden times mooncakes were expensive and kids sometimes might not be able to appreciate the flavours. Some also said that it was actually made from the scraps of the ingredients that was left from making those full size mooncakes, and also can be used as a tester of the oven heat last time.
