So I have lost count of how many times I have been asked, "Are you really trying to do an epic fantasy series for your first work?"
This is usually accompanied by an, "OOKKKIIIEEE" when I say yes.
Over the last week though it set in why people are asking that and the issues lined up exactly with what I am experiencing. I am not skilled enough YET to put years of my life into a fantasy epic and be truly proud of the final result. The return on effort is incredibly low for someone as new to writing as I am.
So what is the solution? I have a fantasy world I am obsessed with building and a story I want to tell. I can't forget about that. Even the planned prequel, if bad, will soil the rest of the series if it is mediocre. I need to adjust the manageable chunks to improve my craft while not damaging the final work I am striving for.
The solution? COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES TAKING PLACE IN THE WORLD OVER VARIOUS TIMES!
I can hear you now, "Daniel, did you really just move the goal post for yourself again?"
You're damn right I did! This is going to be a series I am judged on forever and rushing it to satisfy an imaginary deadline I don't even have yet would be dumb, AND this is good news for you. "Why?", you ask with your nose in the air and a stain on your shirt. BECAUSE YOU GET SHORT STORIES YOU BELLIGERENT BADGERS!
Before, you were maybe going to get chapters here and there. That would be dumb and spoil the main story. Now you get completed stories and watch me get better/judge the shit out of me. I look forward to it. Do you?
Best,
A fellow Belligerent Badger
