So for this short story, I will be jumping to the war in the mountainous north.
Itha has resisted falling to the Empire for so long, but with all other Kingdoms bent, the full weight of the emperors forces are climbing to their high castles.
I like the idea of sending soldiers to fight at high altitudes for this story. It adds a layer of difficulty to warfare, especially siege warfare, that should be fun to work with. It also gives a logical reason as to why Itha has been able to resist falling for so long. If you have never been at high altitudes, even jogging becomes extremely hard for someone new to it. Dehydration becomes an extreme threat, appetites are suppressed, and many other odd side effects that would cripple an invading force.
Those who have lived in the mountains clearly have major advantages. They are adjusted to the climate, know the terrain, and are just physically harder to reach. Combine that with the culture of Itha being one of extreme isolationism, and the fight to destroy the final resistance to continental Imperial Will being reached is a setting I think will be a blast to explore.
