As the months passed, I found myself really putting my head into work. I found myself getting promoted several times; soon enough, I was Mari’s boss. We worked well together.

But one day she came to me with her letter of resignation. I placed my hand on my hip, telling her that I’d speak with the CEO to beat whatever offer she had.

Mari laughed in response. It wasn’t the money. The woman she had been dating had an offer in a different city. She was moving.

She offered her apartment to me. I tried to refuse, but Mari wouldn’t take no for an answer. Eventually, I thanked her and wished her the best. It felt like a chapter in my life was closing, and I finally felt established and comfortable in my new life.
