All life has raw magic within, often referred as magic pool. This raw magic can be refined into mana, and people capable of using mana to cast spells are called mages. The aptitude of a mage is often defined by how much of his magic pool he can convert into mana, and despite mages not being rare, most of them can barely light up a candle or cool down a glass of water using all their power.
Expert mages can bond with fairies to assist them refining raw magic into mana, because the magic pool of people is many times higher than they can convert on their own. Fairies are spirits born when people with high affinity to magic die, and they survive by consuming raw magic with the same affinity and releasing mana back to Valdren. Together with a mage, they create a symbiotic relationship in which the mage provides raw mana for the fairy while they refine and return mana to be used on spells, effectively increasing the mage’s aptitude and power.
