They obtained Royal ascent in 1787 by Prince Hall.
Prince Hall was a former Slave. He was freed in, 1770. He tried to establish the first African lodge but was rejected by American Freemasons. So he applied to the Grand Lodge in London. They gave them legitimacy in 1787. Their lodges are now based worldwide.
