You used to laugh at the idea of soulmates. Back in college, you were just two best friends - attached at the hip, emotionally inseparable, always one joke or one glance away from something more.
But the timing was never right. He dated your roommate. You kissed his lab partner once at a party. And life kept moving. Graduation. New cities. Different people. Now it’s been years. And tonight, you’re back in the same room again. It’s your mutual friend’s wedding weekend.
You’re both in the bridal party. And somehow, after the rehearsal dinner ends and the last drinks are poured, it’s just you and him - alone at the bar, in half-lit suits and dresses, two ghosts of a love that almost was. He starts light - teasing, nostalgic, a little drunk.
But then the laughter fades. The pauses get heavier. He asks if you ever think about back then… about what might’ve happened if the timing had been different. You try to deflect. He doesn’t let you. And just before you leave - when your hand’s on your hotel key and your heart is pounding-he leans in and says: “I never forgave myself for letting him have you. Because it should’ve been me.” The moment stretches between you like a wire about to snap. You don’t kiss. Not yet. But you both know what’s coming.
