Happy April! Spring is technically here, but in Newfoundland the threat of snow is still ever-present until around May so I'm still holding my breath. I know it was a bit quiet around here for the last part of March, because I took my very first trip out of Canada to visit Richmond, Virginia and attend GalaxyCon with my best friend (and favorite collaborator) Victoria Malfoy. Before we get into that, let's get our responsibilities out of the way.
This month is jam packed with fun stuff.
Some very talented patrons have been writing and sharing their scripts in my Discord server and so I'm excited to record a couple of them for early access this month! Easter is also coming and you know I love a holiday theme so there's a fun little kissogram-centered friends to lovers story on the way. LOADS of series audios are in the works too, with a new episode of the Adorable Assassin series for all tiers, and for Bodyguards & Managers there are second episodes of a couple different series on the way, including Call Me Mistress - hard to believe we're on episode 8! You can always check the pinned post to see which audios you're getting at your tier, and I usually add a note about what I'm currently working on if you're curious about that.
I have a few new art pieces I'm waiting to post, so keep an eye out for those summery vibes. I'm still in the process of editing the AMA so bear with me - you should have it this week! Audio polls for May will be up early next week as well so I can get everything organized and planned ahead of time. We're headed into a really amazing few months, I can feel it in my bones.
All right, so about my first international trip...
I haven't traveled much in my lifetime, and never outside Canada, but it has always been a huge dream of mine. I didn't even have a passport up until the middle of March, and my trip was planned for the 27th-31st, so I was cutting it really close on that one! Everything came together in the end and I got to spend the entire weekend with one of my favorite people in the world!
Navigating airports as a solo traveler for the first time was an experience in and of itself, but the convention was an incredible time. So many amazing artisans, and so many famous creatives were there. I got to have a wonderful conversation with one of my favorite actors, Bradley Whitford (if you haven't watched The Handmaid's Tale, I highly recommend it - he plays Commander Lawrence. He's also been in a billion other things!). We happened by his table when there was no line so there was a bit of extra time to chat and I'll be riding that high for the rest of my life. I also got to meet Jason Isaacs, and his panel was a lot of fun to watch. If you know Victoria, you know he's her favorite actor and I live to see my friends fangirling in the wilds. It was so cool to be surrounded by so many fellow nerds, and everyone I met while in Virginia was so friendly, I felt right at home. The gorgeous weather was a nice break from the winter back at home - my sister told me it snowed twice while I was gone but I was enjoying summer temps and wearing dresses.
Southern food is incredible. I had the quintessential American experiences of Waffle House and TGIFridays, but the highlights of my trip were the fried catfish at The Roosevelt and the chicken burger at Cobra Cabana. I'll never stop talking about the catfish though - that was a real showstopper. I got lots of cool treats for myself and my family, and finally getting to hang out with my bestie after 5 years of online friendship was such a dream. Travel isn't something I ever thought I would actually be able to do, so the entire trip felt very surreal in the best way.
I finally got home to Canada around 2am Monday morning, crashed in a hotel in the city, and then slept in my own bed Tuesday night. And you know what? I can't WAIT to travel again. This was a dream come true. Unfortunately I did catch a head cold somewhere along the way so as I write this I'm a total mess of congestion and it feels like I swallowed a chainsaw, so I expect the first early access audios to start rolling out next week instead of this one! Bear with me as I guzzle water and tea and take all the cold meds and lozenges until I'm better enough to rock the mic again.
Have you folks done much traveling? What were your favorite places? And if you haven't traveled yet but want to, what places would you love to go? I'd love to see more of Canada, of course, but so many other places are on my dream list too. Travel is pretty expensive and can be inaccessible, so I try to take small local trips too when I can. Being a tourist in your own town can be a lot of fun! I know hustle culture is a big deal these days and with the world set up the way it is it can often feel like all there is to life is work and sleep, but try to give yourself a break every now and then too. One of the biggest and harshest lessons life gave me when I lost my parents was that there needs to be more to life than survival. Even when you're having a really difficult time, you have to hang on to the idea that things will get better. Last year I wasn't even sure I wanted to be alive at all, and now I'm so grateful I didn't give in to the pain because every day life gets a little better. I don't mean to sound like a shiny happy person, drunk on the Kool-Aid. I absolutely know firsthand what it's like to be in the pits and just trying to find reasons to keep going, but you must. Life can be changed, most things are fixable, and none of this is permanent anyway so just do the best you can with what you have and let that be enough. And if you're a person who wants to do something creative with your life, my only advice is the same advice I heard over and over at the panels I attended at the con: stop overthinking and over-planning and just DO IT. Make the thing. Write the story. Get out of your head and get into the action. That's advice I'm planning to heed myself as we head into summer.
We're going to have a really fun month together, folks. Happy Easter, if you celebrate, and Happy Spring, if you don't. As always, thank you for being here and supporting my work! Everything would be impossible without you and I never forget that for a single second. Now let's get to fertilizing those eggs!
