This is a 1917 Remington manufactured non us marked Mosin. The 50K question was asked..."how do I convince people patina is rust"....
The main photo shows 3 things
1. The underside of the barrel, after the conversion was completed. Original polish still showing. The pits are also there, as noted. No chemicals here, just the arsenal finish.
2. Top of the magwell is unconverted, but unexposed to the elements, original blue
3. Exposed part of the magwell, as exposed to the elements, and not yet conserved.
The escutcheon mortise was harboring corrosion, the screws are heavily rusted and the screw holes are conical. This is what a lack of maintenance turning into rust/patina looks like. Best I can illustrate. A picture is worth a thousand words. Patina is rust.
