This is a picture to show why a test fire is necessary for rimmed rounds. The headspace gauge gives the headspace alright, but says nothing about the neck and shoulder. Firing off a test stand is necessary to verify conditions in the front of the chamber, and is done for any questioned action I see just to be sure.
A long answer to the short question: why don't I just use a headspace gauge? For rimless ammo like the .30/06, the gauge still doesn't speak to the neck area. Everything gets tested...... just sayin. Thanks for your continuing support, as always.
