I was looking into the Federal Charter of 1291, the document that is the Swiss equivalent of the Declaration of Independence, and it talks about honoring a pact, exile and death sentences for applicable crimes, and everything to start the founding of the Old Swiss Confederacy in August of 1291. Because of this document, August 1st is recognized as Swiss National Day.
The charter is written in Latin (no surprise since Italy is on its souther border) and formal independent separation from the Holy Roman Empire occurred in 1648.
I've traced one of my Swiss lines back to mid-1630s to the village of Adelboden. This village is closer to the modern German border so a Swiss-German dialect was linguistically used. The many times grandfather I found was a governor of Adelboden. To think, he was governing his village while Switzerland formally separated from the HRE. The work stresses would have been immense!
