I love thinking outside of the box when it comes to posing. :3 When it comes to poses that requires a lot of posing-precision, I usually practice posing while recording myself. I will then look at the recording and give myself corrections on what I can change to make it look better. Usually I need to make adjustments to ensure I am straightening or moving certain parts to make shapes or for straight lines. I like to make shapes with my body because it's a great challenge...having to curve and straighten your body parts precisely. It's kind of like a form of yoga to me, and requires a lot of my concentration to shift my weight around while keeping my balance!!
I don't look at references since I think it's important to form a pose in a position my body is comfortable with. :D Also I am not usually this tired while practicing, but I'm on my period so I think my hormones are screwing up my stamina. :')
